“It’s in the genes – my Dad was a professional store manager having worked for Sears for 22 years and Wards for 22 years. I literally grew up in a store. On Sunday’s (back in those days stores were closed on Sunday’s) he would go to work to do paperwork or whatever, and I would tag along mostly because I could ride bikes in the store and play with all the sporting goods and other cool stuff. I started my work career in September of 1966 working as a Delivery Driver for Wards (and yes, my Dad helped me get that job) making $1.25 per hour. I ended my career running a $10B business for Home Depot at substantially more than $1.25 an hour. Lots of stuff happened in between the start and the finish – and I will give you a tour down that road.”
